The Mississippi Department of Revenue is warning Mississippi taxpayers of ongoing nationwide text scams. The department has received reports of a scam targeting taxpayers through text messages that appear to be from a government agency.

The 2025 Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is Friday, August 29 to Sunday, August 31. During this timeframe sales tax will not apply on the sale of firearms, ammunition and certain hunting supplies as outlined in the Official Guide.​

Farmers are allowed a reduced sales tax rate on farm tractors, implements, and related repair parts and labor provided these items are used for agricultural purposes. Additionally, certain items commonly purchased by farmers may be entirely exempt from sales tax. ​Senate Bill 2266, which passed during the 2025 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature, calls for a published listing of these items. ​

The Sales Tax Holiday, often referred to as Tax Free Weekend, will start 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2025, and go through midnight Sunday, July 13, 2025. This means that sales tax is not due on eligible clothing, footwear or school supplies if the sales price of a single item is less than $100.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue (MDOR) is notifying retail businesses of the upcoming reduced sales tax rate on groceries so they can adjust their systems appropriately. Beginning July 1, the sales tax due on groceries will decrease from 7% to 5%.

“The decrease is part of House Bill 1 that passed during this year’s Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature,” said MDOR Commissioner Chris Graham. “We are excited to be able to administer this reduction to help provide relief on the cost of groceries to Mississippi families.”
