General Information
If you own a vehicle in Mississippi, you must register with the state. Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 10,000 pounds or less are registered at your local county Tax Collector’s office . Your vehicle should be registered in the county where it is domiciled or parked overnight.
For vehicles with a GVW over 10,000 pounds utilized for in-state travel only, you must register at your local county Tax Collector’s office.
Vehicles with a GVW over 10,000 pounds utilized for interstate travel must register at the nearest MDOR office in Biloxi, Clinton, Hattiesburg, Hernando, or Meridian.

Registration Timeline
New residents have 30 days to register their vehicle(s) after moving to Mississippi, if you have a current registration / valid license plate from your previous state.
If you have recently bought a vehicle, you must register it within 30 business days of the purchase date.
If you bought the vehicle outside of your home county, you have 48 hours to transport the vehicle to your residence or place of business. You then have 30 business days to complete the registration before any penalties apply.
To register a vehicle purchased in another state, you will need:
- Title from the previous state
- Odometer disclosure statement or
- If the vehicle is not titled in the other state, you will need the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.
Failure to register your vehicle within 30 days will result in standard late penalties and an additional $250 penalty.

Renewals
You must renew your motor vehicle registration every year. You should receive a courtesy renewal notice from your local county Tax Collector’s office. If you do not receive a renewal notice, you are still responsible for renewing your registration on time. Failure to renew or expiration of your registration will result in penalties.
