Direct Deposit

Taxpayers who electronically file (efile) Mississippi Individual Income tax returns may have their refund directly deposited to an eligible financial institution of their choice. A financial institution is a state or national bank, savings and loan association, mutual savings bank, or credit union.

Refunds may not be deposited into a credit card account. A separate request to directly deposit a refund must be made each year by the taxpayer. The Department of Revenue ordinarily processes the request for direct deposit but reserves the right to issue a paper refund check.

A direct deposit could be changed to a paper check if one of the following errors occur:

  1. Invalid Routing Number
  2. Wrong Account Number
  3. Closed Account

Once an e-file return is accepted for processing, the direct deposit cannot be changed. (This includes any change to the Routing Transit Number (RTN) and financial institution's account number.) The name on the return should be the same as on the bank account. Some banks will not accept a joint check to be deposited into an account with only one of the names.

Two reliable sources where you can find the direct deposit information you need are (1) from the financial institution's account identification card and (2) your cancelled check.

DOR does not guarantee a specific date that a refund will be deposited into a taxpayer's financial account and cannot issue written notices to taxpayers to confirm direct deposits. You may check the status of your refund online at TAP.  If you cannot check online, you may call (601) 923-7801. Office representatives do not have any information that you cannot view online in TAP.

DOR is not responsible for the misapplication of a direct deposit refund that is caused by error, negligence, or fraud on the part of the taxpayer, electronic filer, financial institution or any of their agents.

Information for Software Providers

Mississippi allows individual income tax returns to be filed on-line through an approved service provider. If your company is interested in becoming an on-line service provider, please contact our office at (601) 923-7700.

Tax preparers and tax practitioners should refer to the Mississippi e-file Handbook, a companion to the Internal Revenue Service Publication 4164 . Since most functions of the Federal/State e-file Program are the same as the Federal e-file Program, the handbook highlights the special and unique features of the Mississippi program.

All rules and regulations governing tax preparers, transmitters, and originators of returns put forth by the Internal Revenue Service are in effect for the Mississippi Department of Revenue. The procedures and requirements for the Federal/State e-file Program are outlined in Publication 3112.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue requires all participants to be accepted into the Federal program in order to participate in the State e-file Program. The DOR recommends that all participants study Publication 4164 prior to reading the Mississippi Handbook. Where the Internal Revenue Service provides detailed instructions on hardware, transmission procedures, policies, etc., those same requirements apply to the Mississippi program.

Mississippi E-File Program for Individuals

Returns are more accurate and refunds are much faster when you e-file

  • Computer programs quickly catch mistakes before they become problems.
  • File now, pay later option. Payment can be delayed until April 15th. (You can pay online through TAP!)
  • Direct deposit of individual income tax refunds is available for e-file returns.

How You can File your Return Electronically

Use a tax preparer that is approved in the Mississippi e-file Program. (Make sure your tax preparer is approved by the IRS for e-file and signs your Form MS 8453, Mississippi State Declaration for Electronic Filing.)

Many state revenue agencies are requesting additional information this filing season in an effort to combat stolen-identity tax fraud to protect you and your tax refund.  If you have a driver's license or state issued identification card, please provide the requested information from it. The return will not be rejected if you do not provide a driver's license or state-issued identification.  Providing the information can only help process the return more quickly.

Tax Practitioners and Tax Preparers

Tax preparers and tax practitioners should refer to the Mississippi Corporate / Pass Through Entity Tax Returns e-File Handbook / Repository, a companion to the Internal Revenue Service Publication 4163. Since most functions of the State Modernized e-File Program are the same as the Federal Modernized e-File Program, the handbook / repository highlights the special and unique features of the Mississippi program.

All rules and regulations governing tax preparers, transmitters, and originators of returns put forth by the Internal Revenue Service are in effect for the Mississippi Department of Revenue. The procedures and requirements for the Modernized e-File. Program are outlined in Publication 4163.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue requires all participants to be accepted into the Federal program in order to participate in the State e-File Program. The DOR recommends that all participants study Publication 4163 prior to reading the Mississippi Corporate and Pass Through Entity Tax Return Handbook / Repository. Where the Internal Revenue Service provides detailed instructions on hardware, transmission procedures, policies, etc., those same requirements apply to the Mississippi program.
